We're not all like Caitlyn Jenner.
Hi, I'm Tish Mellon, a transgender woman in her 20s and author of this audiobook. My publisher calls the book a transgender memoir, but I'm too young to be writing biographies and memoirs. I'd rather think of it as a suspenseful "coming of age" book, a battle of the sexes, a chess game. To me, it's not a sleepy memoir; it's a fast-paced audio.
The Man Who Trained Me A Transgender Memoir Coming of Age Transgender Romance Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Tish Mellon Mary Cyn Transgender Books Books
"You have no idea how lucky you are being a girl! Now, go out and have fun!" That's what my transgender hairdresser in San Francisco said to me after she's done my hair. That's my first time having a real conversation with a transgender. The message I got from my haircut session was that she wanted to be a girl from the bottom of her heart, but we never talked about her story...All I know is that she is amazingly beautiful and incredibly skillful. When the author of "The Man Who Trained Me" reached out to me for pre-reviewing her book, I was very grateful for the opportunity. Curiosity made me open the book. I got completely sucked in after reading the first page. Tish's personal story was a total surprise to me. Unlike my hairdresser, Tish became a girl from a boy upon the will of Mr. G, a man she worked for. There's no judgement in her book. The level of honesty was nothing like I have ever read before. I was totally blown away by Tish's story. The publisher is right. The book is a study about transgenders. Thank you Tish for revealing your life with the world through your outstanding story telling ability. It is special and eye-opening!
I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

The Man Who Trained Me A Transgender Memoir Coming of Age Transgender Romance Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Tish Mellon Mary Cyn Transgender Books Books Reviews
I enjoyed this well-written, fast-paced coming of age story. I think of this book as a 21st century American Graffiti with a twist.
Even though this was my first time reading a story of this genre it was captivating and kept me interested the whole time. I love that Tish really captures the emotional essence of each character, especially the main character, and presented the human dynamics in a powerful way. I am eagerly awaiting the next part of the story because I can't wait to see how the story will develop.
This book was terrifically written and kept my attention the whole way through! I would recommend this book to anyone, even those not interested in transgender books. There is a bit of a cliff hanger and I cannot wait for the next book )
Curious, I sat down to read a few pages before doing some work. I never got to the work part. Completely absorbed in Tish Mellon's open sharing of her very intimate journey, I just couldn't stop reading. Not only is the content an eye opener, the writing style is fabulous, fresh and to the point.
Thank you Tish for stepping up and out.
Tish Mellon wrote a poignant "coming of age" story that is shocking and upsetting, yet funny. On one hand, I was genuinely curious about her experiences. On the other, I was disturbed by the "grooming" by her boss Mr. G. Miss Mellon offers a disturbing look at how a pedophile works to tempt, cajole, and threaten a young person. (In the memoir Ms. Mellon notes that she was not the first teenager to be raped to keep her job.)
The memoir is short, and I'm looking forward to book 2. (I hope that book 2 involves some type of punishment for Ms. Mellon's predatory boss Mr. G.)
I admit I don’t much about the world of transgendered people. I want to better understand what it is like to be transgendered and the struggles they face on a daily basis. This book is written by a transgender women based on her life story.
When I read this phrase, “I was changed from a boy to a girl by a man much older than me and trained to be a ‘sex kitten’ (his words, not mine)” I was shocked and a little scared. How does a boy turn into a girl? Does it hurt? Why would anyone want to change their gender?
I had a million questions racing through my head and slowly but surely Ms. Mellon answered them all through her riveting first person narrative.
I want to do my part in spreading love to all people of Earth, and I believe understanding everyone and the struggles they face is a good first step. I really admire Tish for being so open and courageous by sharing her story. I’m sure some hateful blokes out there might not understand her, but that doesn’t matter. To me, she’s a modern day hero and I’m sure young transgender teenagers will find this book motivating to know there is nothing wrong in being who you want to be. Bravo.
Full five stars from me!
A double caveat this book is honesty in pure form. I think it may be shocking for some, but nothing my (I’m 28) and younger generations can take.
Tish Mellon tells an excellent story and is a gifted writer. There are plenty of insights throughout this book, which the reader will gobble up in no time. It’s a fascinating look at a deeply disturbing topic.
Human sexuality is a complicated thing and every person should be given the chance to develop their own sexual identity without pressure. “Mr. G” is a monster using his power and position to groom underage children until he can rape them without protest. I don’t care how willing the youngsters involved think they were. He’s an adult who used their budding sexuality to satisfy himself. He’s a criminal and if he tried those machinations on my girls I’d want to kill him. I was almost in tears reading his threats to Tish about her father's job. What a creep.
The author’s ability to forgive Mr. G is wonderful, if she truly understands what a terrible thing he did to her and is not still under his spell. It’s a relief that she’s now an adult who can make her own sexual choices. I really hope they don’t involve him.
